A Fundamental Part of Our Work

Many of us believe the myth: Soon things will be more settled. We invent and rely on an imaginary future in which everything will feel more stable once we get there. Does this sound familiar? We often tell ourselves that relief is around the corner, as we confront the realities of endless doing, lists that produce more lists, and a work life that is truly depleting. We are over-caffeinated and undernourished — the low battery alert on our screens mirroring the realities of our inner life, as stress accumulates and even damages the miraculous ecosystem of the human body-heart-mind.

When, during the course of our workday, we have access to healing spaces that support us in setting our work down for a moment, and we trust that this pause is itself a fundamental part of our work, we are granted an opportunity to gather together in the spirit of attending to ourselves. There we can discover greater tranquility and resilience within and return to our lives and work with greater energy, productivity, and purpose.

From the mindfulness perspective, we can discover true well-being when we learn to observe our moment-to-moment human experience. When we make time for stillness, authentically connect and relate to the fact that we are breathing, illuminate and reorient towards the range of our inner experience, we create the conditions for our deeper intelligences to come forth.

Although mindfulness-based practices do not solve our difficulties, a growing body of research suggests that they may empower individuals to respond more resourcefully to life’s challenges. Regular community-based meditation can reduce stress, improve health, and cultivate joy.

Mindfulness is not an intellectual endeavor or something we can master with a quick workshop. If we are curious, it asks for our long-term curiosity, patience, and the willingness to regularly gather in community and temporarily let go of the doing. Over time, we receive the gifts and nourishment of these beautiful, ancient teachings. We harness awareness, wisdom, and agency. We discover a deeper level of gratitude. We become empowered to speak and act in accordance with our highest good. We can become an even greater source of safety and support for those we serve.
